Dedicated Computing’s Journey to Deep Supply Chain Sustainability
Dedicated Computing’s transformation into a sustainability-focused company was driven by two things. First, growing demand from their biggest customers for deep supply chain sustainability and the data that comes with it. Second, people who were passionate about delivering a program that could meet and exceed those demands. At the heart of this program is Tim Jandt, Senior Regulatory Engineer.
The journey began in 2018, when Dedicated Computing was grappling with the complexities of running a product compliance program. “We were essentially the small company looking for some help in collecting compliance data, primarily revolving around RoHS and REACH,” said Jandt. Ongoing compliance proved to be quite the feat, so they turned to Assent to help manage their program.
As Dedicated Computing grew, so did their ambitions when it came to compliance, and they expanded their program. “We added on the conflict minerals solution. And then, recently, the ESG solution,” Jandt said. “I’m a sucker for good data.”
And it wasn’t just Jandt who loved the data they were getting. Customers now had what other companies often struggle to deliver: sustainability embedded in the supply chain. Dedicated Computing could now demonstrate to key clients — clients that contributed to a substantial slice of the company’s revenue — that they could deliver not only the responsible products they needed, but also the data to back it up.
Dedicated Computing & Assent
When Dedicated Computing set their sights on meeting customer expectations for supply chain sustainability, they knew they needed a partner. “Over time, Assent became an extension of our own business,” said Jandt. “It took the heavy lifting of data collection off our plates.”
This shift allowed Dedicated Computing to redirect their focus from the nuts and bolts of compliance to broader strategic goals.
The benefits were undeniable and immediately clear to everyone at Dedicated Computing. Jandt explains the logic that won over their leadership: “We have Assent behind us with employees that can speak all these different languages — plus, they’ll do the research and keep us up to date on regulatory changes and our requirements.”
This partnership hasn’t just made life easier at Dedicated Computing — it’s also provided a significant return on investment. “To do it ourselves, we’re probably looking at two to three full-time employees, plus all the associated costs,” said Jandt.
Creating a Culture of Compliance
When new leadership arrived at Dedicated Computing, it came with a push to go above and beyond in terms of supply chain sustainability, transforming compliance from a background task into a core aspect of the company’s culture.
“Our CEO, Phil Spivey, sees and values the contribution that we make with Assent and with the compliance data we provide,” said Jandt. This has altered the company’s narratives around compliance, turning it from overhead into an essential part of growth. This new, holistic view of sustainability acknowledges that it’s about what happens within the company’s operations as well as its supply chain.
And Dedicated Computing’s renewed focus on compliance and sustainability has started to turn heads. In 2023, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce awarded them the Business Friend of the Environment Award, which recognizes innovative approaches to environmental protection and efforts that surpass regulatory compliance.
