The Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) has released Version 6.1 of the Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT). The CMRT is updated annually, and is widely used across industries to facilitate responsible minerals reporting.

Version 6.1 of the template will be used for the 2021 conflict minerals reporting year, with Conflict Minerals Reports (CMRs) due in May 2022.

The updates to this version of the CMRT include:

  • Bug and error corrections.
  • Updates to the Smelter Reference List and Standard Smelter List.
  • Translation improvements.

Why the RMI Updates the Template

The CMRT updates are an opportunity for the RMI to streamline the submission process by cleaning out bugs and making other enhancements. The smelter lists are also updated at this time to ensure accurate, up-to-date information about the smelters or refiners (SORs) used by companies. These are crucial points in the conflict minerals supply chain and accurate data about them is necessary to confidently assess risk.

The template has long been used to meet legal obligations established by Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, but has been updated to support other legislation, such as the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation.

The RMI has developed additional templates to assist companies as scrutiny expands beyond conflict minerals to take a more holistic approach to responsible minerals extraction. The Cobalt Reporting Template (CRT) and Mica Reporting Template are standards used in the reporting of cobalt and mica respectively.

How to Use the CMRT

The template removes many of the barriers suppliers encounter when submitting conflict minerals data and ensures standardized submissions for cleaner data, faster analysis, and higher response rates. However, the template is just one part of a successful conflict minerals program.
